CAPITAL DISTRICT MILITARY FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP JOINS
PUGNACIOUS PROMOTIONS AT FRIDAY NIGHT F(R)IGHTS AT THE ARMORY

Albany, N.Y. – The Capital District Military Family Support Group, a grass-roots organization that educates and supports local military families and the community about the needs of families facing deployment and re-integration, will join Pugnacious Promotions at the October 28th fight card at the Washington Avenue Armory, in Albany, N.Y.

The support group will provide information to the show’s audience about its mission, arrange a color guard presentation and help present an award to acknowledge the contribution of a local military unit in the Capital District who just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq three weeks ago.

Event sponsor Gold’s Gym will donate a one-year gym membership at any of its three locations to be raffled off as part of the evening’s activities. Proceeds of the raffle will benefit Capital District Military Family Support Group.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to get the word out about our organization and participate in another exciting night of boxing,” said Patti Molik, MS, program director of the Capital District Military Family Support Group. “I am pleased that local veterans will be recognized at this event for their bravery and sacrifices.”

The family support group provides education workshops, grief and crisis intervention, support services for veterans and speaks to a variety of organizations, including schools and places of worship. It provides information about issues families face when a soldier is deployed; works with school districts on issues for children experiencing deployment; educates about the challenges part-time soldiers face when committed full-time; coordinates clergy who assist with the spiritual needs of military families and supports families with re-integration issues.

“One of our top priorities is to contribute something back to the communities that support our boxing events,” said Lisa Elovich, Pugnacious Promotions president. “Capital District Military Families is a group that needs to be heard and supported by everyone in our area.”

As part of every boxing event, Pugnacious Promotions invites a related charity or non-profit organization to participate in the evening’s activities and receive a donation from the night’s proceeds. On August 19th, the beneficiary of our donation was the Backstretch Employees Service Team (BEST), which assists with the family needs of licensed personnel working on the backstretches of Aqueduct, Belmont Park and Saratoga Racetracks. Our May 13th event benefited the Fighters Initiative for Support and Training (F.I.S.T.), a charitable organization that assists retired boxers with the support and training needed to carry on their lives after they leave the ring. These organizations receive free promotional benefits as well as a monetary donation.

Pugnacious Promotions also supports amateur boxing organizations throughout the community. Local amateur boxers are recognized in the ring between bouts on fight night and, for this show, local trainers will select two hard-working and dedicated boxers from each of their respective gyms to receive a complimentary ticket to the fight from Pugnacious Promotions.

“Friday Night F(r)ights at the Armory” will feature local fighters in competitive bouts, including heavyweight Shannon Miller (11-1, 6 KOs, Troy, N.Y.), heavyweight Gary Wilcox (19-3-1, 6 KOs, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), welterweight Frank Houghtaling (19-9-5, 4 KOs, Colonie, N.Y.) junior middleweight Tony Marshall (37-12-3, 13 KOs, Albany, N.Y.), welterweight Wayland Willingham (7-0, 4 KOs, Albany, N.Y.) and junior welterweight Hervey Medina (4-0-1, 1 KO, Highland, N.Y.).

Tickets are on sale at the Armory box office, (518) 694-7160, or through Ticketmaster by phone (518-476-1000), at any outlet or online at www.ticketmaster.com. General Admission tickets are $20; Reserved, $30; Ringside, $75 and first two rows, $100.

Sponsors of the event include Budweiser, Ruch Distributors, The Swyer Companies, Tioga Downs, Gold’s Gym, Capital District OTB and Nat Sherman Cigars.
