WINS BY TKO IN THRILLING BOUT; MILLER, WILCOX WIN UNANIMOUS Albany, N.Y. –
A sell-out crowd of 2,500 saw Lenord “The Haitian Sensation”
Pierre (18-1, 13 KOs, Catskill, N.Y.) win by TKO over veteran contender
Tony Marshall (37-13-6, 13 KOs, Albany, N.Y.) on Pugnacious
Promotions’ October 28th
boxing card at the Washington Avenue Armory in Albany, N.Y.
Referee Eddie Claudio
stopped the bout on the advice of the physician at ringside between the
seventh and eighth rounds. Pierre
stalked Marshall from the opening bell, throwing wide hooks and crosses,
and knocked Marshall down in the second. Marshall moved behind the jab and landed some good shots
early. As Marshall’s
movement slowed and Pierre shortened his punches, Pierre landed more
frequently and caught Marshall on the ropes. In separate bouts,
heavyweights Shannon Miller (12-1,
6 KOs, Troy, N.Y.) and Gary Wilcox (19-3-1, 6 KOs, Saratoga Springs,
N.Y.) won six-round unanimous decisions. Miller faced tough ring veteran Harold Rodriguez (6-15, 2
KOs, Taunton, Mass.) in his return to the ring after the fight ranked
second in ESPN2/”Friday Night Fights’ “Top Five Fights” of 2005
against power-puncher Vinny Maddalone (23-3, 18 KOs, Flushing, N.Y.). Wilcox, in his second fight as a heavyweight after contending
at cruiserweight, faced a veteran of more 60 pro fights, Dennis McKinney
(27-33-1, 13 KOs. Columbia, S.C.). In four-round undercard
bouts, Eduardo Torres (2-3, 1 KO, Puerto Rico) won by majority decision
over pro debuter Damian Rinaldi (0-1), Syracuse, N.Y.
Richard Pearson (1-0, Patterson, NJ) won by TKO in the first over
another Syracuse native, Ron Lewis (0-1), also in his first pro fight.
Highland, N.Y. junior welterweight Hervey Medina (5-0-1, 2 KOs)
won by third round TKO over Marco Mayorga (0-2, Brentwood, N.Y).
The
Capital District Military Family Support Group, a grass-roots
organization that educates and supports local military families and the
community about the needs of families facing deployment and
re-integration, helped Pugnacious Promotions acknowledge the 101st
Calvary, who just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq.
Soldiers received complimentary tickets to the show and were
recognized in the ring. The
support group received 100% of the proceeds of raffles held at the
event. This
was the third and final boxing card of 2005 for Pugnacious Promotions,
founded and lead by Lisa Elovich, New York state’s only licensed
female boxing promoter. The
first two shows – at the Saratoga Springs City Center on August 19th
and at Saratoga Gaming and Raceway on May 13th – were both very well
received. The Summer event
featured the bout ranked second in the “Top Five Fights” of 2005 on
ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights, the heavyweight match-up between local
favorite Shannon Miller (11-1, 6 KOs), Troy, N.Y., and Vinny Maddalone
(25-3, 18 KOs), of Flushing, N.Y. At the first event, which marked the
return of pro boxing to the Capital Region, a sell-out crowd saw Frank
Houghtaling (19-9-5, 4 KOs), of Colonie, N.Y., earn a welterweight title
belt. Sponsors
of the event included Budweiser, Ruch Distributors, The Swyer Companies,
Tioga Downs, Gold’s Gym, Capital District OTB and Nat Sherman Cigars. -30- Return to News |
