WILLINGHAM FEATURED IN NATIONAL BOXING MAGAZINE

Albany, N.Y. – Undefeated junior welterweight Wayland Willingham (11-0, 6 KOs) is featured in the March 2007 issue of Boxing Digest, a 25,000-circulation national boxing monthly.

Citing his “lightening speed, tons of talent and … world of potential,” the profile of Willingham, a native of Albany, N.Y. living in Atlanta, Ga., appears in the “Prospects” feature, which highlights up-and-coming talent from around the country.  The 28 year-old southpaw stepped up in his last fight, winning an eight-round unanimous decision over tough Mexican Carlos Molina (8-3-1, 4 KOs) at Vernon Downs Raceway in central New York.  Prior to facing Willingham, Molina earned a draw and lost a close majority decision in back-to-back fights with Julio Caesar Chavez, Jr., the son of the legendary Mexican champion.

Before the Molina match, Willingham won his last two six-round fights by impressive early KOs.  He’ll move up in class again toward 10 and 12-round fights and challenge for a regional title after a few more bouts.

“I always knew that Wayland had tremendous potential and talent as a fighter,” said Lisa Elovich, Willingham’s promoter.  “It is great that he is now being recognized on a national level as a prospect.  The goal is for Wayland to get a shot at a world title within the next few years.”

Willingham has strong ties to New York’s Capital city.  His mother, Wanda Willingham, is a long-time community activist currently serving her second term in the Albany County Legislature.  He began his pro boxing career in Atlanta, Ga. where he attends college.
