LOCAL UNDERCARD FIGHTERS FEATURED AS PUGNACIOUS PROMOTIONS
RETURNS TO THE TWIN TIERS MAY 29TH AT TIOGA DOWNS

Nichols, N.Y. May 22, 2008 – Regional fighters will be featured in four-round fights on the undercard when pro boxing returns to the Twin Tiers Thursday, May 29th at Tioga Downs Racing, Gaming and Entertainment, just outside Binghamton, N.Y.

The youngest member of Ithaca, N.Y.'s boxing dynasty, middleweight Willie Monroe, Jr. (1-0, 1 KO) will face Robert Harris (0-1), Youngstown, Ohio; Conklin, N.Y. light heavyweight Daren Graham (1-1, 1 KO) takes on pro debuter Markus Williams, Schenectady, N.Y. and Rochester cruiserweight Sean Thompson (4-0, 2 KOs) will fight Josh Harris (1-1-1, 1 KO), also of Youngstown.

Monroe was a standout amateur boxer and the third generation of the fighting Monroe family. His dad, a middleweight fighting out of Rochester in the 80s and 90s, compiled a 24-4 record, including winning an NABU title and challenging for the NABF regional championship. Willie “The Worm” Monroe, fighting out of Philadelphia in the 70s, was 40-10 overall and faced the legendary Marvin Hagler three times, including a 10-round decision win and North American Middleweight title challenge 12-round TKO loss. Monroe Jr. made his pro debut in Rochester in March, a third-round TKO win over Erix Quinteros (0-1).

Thompson, 6’6 and 190 lbs, is a Rochester-based fan favorite who fought most recently in Albany, N.Y., a six-round unanimous decision win over Chris Horn (3-1, 2 KOs). Graham is a 170-pound fighter who represented the region at the last Tioga Downs fight card, winning by first-round KO over pro debuter Carlos Harris in September 2006.

The card’s co-feature bouts have two undefeated prospects in tough, eight-round fights as undefeated light welterweight prospect Wayland Willingham (13-0, 8 KOs), Albany, N.Y., faces hard-punching gatekeeper Doel Carrasquillo (11-7, 9 KOs), Lancaster, Penn., and undefeated heavyweight Nagy Aguilera (7-0, 5 KOs), Newburgh, N.Y., takes on tough veteran Jason Bergman (7-5, 4 KOs), Pittsburgh. Penn.

“I’m so excited to bring boxing back to the Twin Tiers and Tioga Downs,” said Lisa Elovich, president, Pugnacious Promotions. “The fans are going to love watching local fighters from the region as well as the two, highly-competitive feature fights.”

The Twin Tiers has a rich boxing history. Hall of Fame heavyweight champion Jack Sharkey, the only man to fight both Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis, was born and raised in Binghamton. Many local fans also remember fight cards at the Kaluhra Temple in the 40s-50s – featuring all-time greats like Carmen Basilio – and fights at the Broome County Arena in past decades. Hudson Valley world featherweight champion Tracy Harris Patterson won an NABF belt there in 1990.
