FIGHTS: NIGHT OF FUTURE CHAMPIONS Saratoga Springs, July 26, 2007 – Undefeated welterweight prospect and former Olympian Andre Berto (18-0, 16 KOs) faces former title challenger Cosme Rivera (30-10, 21 KOs) in the toughest test of his promising, young career in the headline bout of the annual summer boxing card at the Saratoga Springs City Center on Friday, July 27th. Philadelphia heavyweight prospect Chazz Witherspoon (18-0, 12 KOs) takes on a similar test against Talmadge Griffis (24-6, 16 KOs) in the co-feature of the event promoted by Pugnacious Promotions and DiBella Entertainment during the first weekend of world-class thoroughbred racing at the city’s historic race course. Feature fights on the card – held on the first night of twilight racing the evening before the Breeder's Cup qualifier Whitney Stakes – will be televised on ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights.” “Capital Region Boxing fans are in for a wild ride in Saratoga on Friday night,” said Lisa Elovich co-promoter of the event. “We have high-level, competitive feature fights as well as an exciting undercard filled with up-and-coming young boxers from across New York State. We are thrilled to be working with Lou Dibella and his great stable of fighters. I am confident that the fight fans will trot out to support boxing in this region.” Berto, Winterhaven, Fla., is considered by many to be a future world champion. A 2004 Olympian, Berto won his last 14 pro fights by KO, six in the first round. Rivera, Culiacan, Mexico, challenged Zab Judah (34-5, 25 KOs) for the undisputed welterweight championship in 2005. Witherspoon was 2004 Olympic alternate and National Golden Gloves winner. He also has impressed in his pro career, remaining undefeated in 18 fights and stopping his last five opponents. In his well-traveled, nine-year career, Talmadge Griffis, Colorado Springs, Co., faced contenders David Tua (47-3, 40 KOs) and Joe Mesi (35-0, 28 KOs). Also appearing on the card are Kingston super middleweight Brandon Mitchem (25-4, 8 KOs), who faces veteran Dhafir Smith (16-15-5, 4 KOs) in a six-rounder, Plainview Long Island's Tommy Rainone (7-0, 2 KOs), who will fight six rounds with Jorge Delgado (3-5, 2 KOs) and Guilderland's Chris Horn (2-0, 1 KO) who will go four rounds with Jonah Cogar (1-3-1, 1 KO). Two young, standout Irish boxers will make their US debut on the undercard. Undefeated super bantamweight Paul Hyland (8-0, 4 KOs), Dublin, will face Allentown, PA’s Arthur Parker (1-1, 1 KOs) and Eurpoean and Irish national champion and pro debuter at light heavyweight Alo Kelly, Westmeath, will face Polish pug Rafel Jastrezbski (0-3-1). Tickets will be available at the Saratoga Springs City Center on Thursday, July 26th, from Noon-5:00 pm and Friday, July 27th from 9:00 am to the event.
