SARATOGA’S OWN GARY WILCOX, TOP CRUISERWEIGHT

CONTENDER, RETURNS TO FIGHT AT HEAVYWEIGHT

Saratoga Springs, NY – Gary Wilcox (18-3-1, 6 KOs), the Saratoga-based cruiserweight contender, will make his return to the ring to begin a new campaign at heavyweight at the Saratoga Springs City Center on Friday, August 19, 2005.

At 6’4”, Wilcox’s intensive strength training program and work with good heavyweights in the gym have made him a legitimate heavyweight contender.  He returns to the ring three years after his last fight, a split decision victory over Rochester cruiserweight Jermell Barnes at the City Center.   On August 19, he’ll face tough veteran Harold Rodriguez of Taunton, Mass.

“I know there are a lot of people excited about my comeback as a heavyweight,” said Wilcox. “It was getting really hard to make the cruiserweight limit.  Now I'm weighing 240 pounds and I've never felt this strong.”

“If Gary can bring his speed and boxing skills from cruiserweight and combine them with his new strength and punching power he's going to be tough to beat,” said Andy Schott, Wilcox’s long-time trainer and a successful amateur and professional boxer himself.

The fight will be on the undercard of the exciting heavyweight matchup between local rising star Shannon Miller (11-0, 6 KOs), of Troy, N.Y., and Flushing, N.Y.’s popular heavyweight contender Vinny Maddalone (24-2, 17 KOs). Televised live by ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights,” the bouts will be held during the heart of the famed city’s horseracing season, one week prior to the 136th running of the Travers Stakes.

Other local favorites from the Albany-Saratoga region will fight competitive bouts on the undercard, as well.

Tickets are on sale now at 866-468-7619 or www.ticketweb.com and at the door on August 18th and 19th.  Call 518-584-0027 for more information.
