August 19th "Battle of
the Heavyweights" at Saratoga
Professional
boxing returned to the Mecca of world-class thoroughbred racing when
local rising star Shannon Miller
(11-1, 6 KOs) met popular
heavyweight contender Vinny Maddalone (25-2, 18 KOs, Flushing, NY) in
the headline bout of the "Battle of the Heavyweights" at the
Saratoga
Springs City Center on Friday, August 19, 2005.
Miller
and Maddalone had the screaming crowd on its feet from the opening bell
in a back-and-forth fight ranked second in the "Top Five
Fights" of 2005 on ESPN 2's "Friday Night Fights." It
ended in a fifth-round TKO when Maddalone caught Miller with a
left hook the Troy, NY native never saw!
On the undercard, local favorite Gary Wilcox
(19-3-1 6 KOs),
Saratoga Springs, NY, returned to the ring as a heavyweight after
compiling a solid record as a cruiserweight and dominated in a
six round unanimous decision win over tough journeyman Harold Rodriguez
(6-13- 2, 1 KO). Albany, NY native Wayland Willingham (7-0, 4 KOs)
showed
impressive skills in a four-round unanimous decision win over veteran
Shakha Moore (9-10-3, 4 KOs, Norwalk CT).
In the ESPN2-televised co-feature, Andrey
Tksurkan (23-2, 14 KOs), from Ukraine fighting out of the Bronx, NY, won
a fifth-round TKO over Julian Burford (12-2, 10 KOs,
Cleveland, OH). Maximino Cuevas (5-1, 2 KOs, Bronx, NY) stopped
Sheldon Rudolph (3-2, 2 KOs, Patterson, NJ) with a vicious left hook to
the body in the first round. In the opening bout, Jorge Teron (5-0, 4
KOs, Bronx, NY) won a unanimous decision four-rounder over Eduardo
Torres (1-3, Puerto Rico). Unfortunately, junior welter Hervy
Medina (3-0-1, Highland, NY) watched from the audience when his opponent
failed to make weight.
Pugnacious
Promotions co-promoted the event with Joe
DeGuardia’s Star Boxing, which has promoted
professional
fights for over 15 years, most recently the two Antonio Tarver-Glen
Johnson Light Heavyweight Championship cards. DeGuardia will promote the
Tarver-Roy Jones, Jr. rubber match on October 1, as well.
