Looking forward to 2009...

This fall, Pugnacious is planning a few big fight cards for 2009, including a winter show at a casino resort and our annual summer card in Saratoga Springs during the thoroughbred race season.  Check back soon for details.

In local amateur boxing, undeafeated heavyweight Shawn Miller -- our own Shannon Miller's younger brother -- and other local boxers will compete at a special amateur boxing show hosted by the Miller family and Uncle Sam Boxing at Catholic Central High School, in Troy, NY, on Saturday, October 18th, at 7:30 pm.  Come out and support these young, local prospects.

On the national boxing scene, there are some exciting fights you may want to check out, too.  In October, middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik takes on the ageless warrior Bernard Hopkins and undefeated super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe faces former pound-for-pound king Roy Jones, Jr.  In November, colorful Brooklyn light welter Paulie Malignaggi takes on Britain's Ricky Hatton and, in December, multi-division champ Oscar De La Hoya faces current pound-for-pound leader Manny Pacquiao in true, modern-day superfight.

Check Fightnews.com and Maxboxing.com for the latest news.

For those of you who enjoy the amusing entertainment of pro wrestling, James Commarto will present a fun-filled evening featuring former WWE, TNA and ECW superstars on Saturday, Oct 25th at 7:30 pm at the Washington Avenue Armory.  For tickets, call James Ringside Gym 518-506-2352 or the Armory box office.

ESPN/Friday Night Fights in Saratoga!

Prospect and famous boxing son James "Buddy" McGirt, Jr. (19-1, 9 KOs) returned to the ring following his first loss with an impressive 10-round unanimous decision over number eight-ranked middleweight and former champion Ray Joval (37-5 16 KOs) in the televised main event of our annual "Night of Future Champions" card Friday, July 25th at the Saratoga Springs City Center.

Most of the 1,600 fans in the sell-out crowd agreed that the fight of the night was the first bout after the cameras went off between local lightweight prospect Mike Faragon (4-0) and tough gatekeeper Francisco Palacios (3-4-4, 1 KO).  The two warriors banged for six rounds with the largely partisan crowd cheering Faragon's dominating display of boxing skills and respecting the relentless pressure and heart of Palacios.  Faragon earned a unanimous decision to remain undefeated.

In other bouts, heavyweight Nagy Aguilera (9-0, 6 KOs) won a close decision over Saratoga's own veteran Gary Wilcox (21-4, 7 KOs) in the eight-round, televised co-feature and Julio Garcia (2-1, 1 KO) narrowly defeated Borngod Washington (0-4) in a crowd pleasing four-rounder just before intermission.  In two local rivalries, Markus Williams (2-0, 1 KO) defeated fellow Albany native Donyell Dukes (0-4) in the opening bout of the card and Schenectady's Brian Miller (2-0-3) and Bryan Abraham (0-0-1) fought to a draw in the final bout of the night.

Vera Beats Lee in Shocking TKO 7 Slugfest at
Mohegan Sun on Friday Night Fights!

Brian Vera (16-1, 10 KOs), who's fighting style made him a fan favorite on The Contender III last year, dealt Irish Olympian and middleweight prospect Andy Lee (15-1, 12 KOs) his first loss by shocking TKO in the seventh round of the 10-round main event before 3,600 fans at Mohegan Sun on Friday, March 21st.  The ESPN2/Friday Night Fights-televised war started as expected with Lee using superior speed and boxing skills to keep Vera off-balance with his southpaw right jab and land numerous power shots, knocking the Texan down in the first.  Vera displayed incredible stamina and chin to weather Lee's assault and continue applying pressure.  He eventually wore Lee down and -- though the Irish fighter continued to throw punches -- forced referee Tony Chiarantano to stop an early candidate for Fight of the Year at 2:10 of the seventh frame.  Trainer Emanuel Steward has already hinted a rematch is in the works.  Aaron Pryor, Jr. (9-0, 6 KOs) survived a few rocky moments to beat relentless Alphonso Wlliams (10-4, 8 KOs) in the eight-round co-feature, topping a competitive undercard that saw local favorites Matt Remillard (13-0, 7 KOs) and Brian Macy (3-0, 1 KO) win tough four-round decisions.
