Legislature Commends Shannon Miller of Troy for Boxing Victories

The Rensselaer County Legislature honored Shannon Miller of Troy at the June 13 legislative meeting for outstanding performance during two professional boxing matches in 2006 in the Capital Region, Chairman of the Legislature Neil J. Kelleher announced.

Kelleher said Miller's recent wins have thrilled boxing fans and helped foster new interest in local boxing and area sports. Both of the matches happened before large crowds at the recently reopened Washington Avenue Armory.

"These were great fights and great performances by Shannon Miller. He is just another example of the many great young athletes we have here in Rensselaer County and the area," said Kelleher.

On March 17, Miller helped recognize the return of professional boxing to the area with a sixth-round technical knockout of David Chappell.  On May 19, Miller defeated Ralph West with a second-round knockout.

The wins advanced Shannon Miller's record to an impressive 14-1 with 8 knockouts.  For years, Miller's parents, Bob and Lorraine Miller, have been major players in the local boxing scene.

They founded the Uncle Sam Boxing Club and staged boxing demonstrations and instruction for youths in Troy and the area.

"Bob and Lorraine Miller have done a great deal of work in the local boxing community and in youth athletics. It's great to see their son Shannon doing so well and advancing his boxing career this year," said Legislator Laura Bauer.

Miller will be invited to a future meeting of the Legislature to receive a copy of the resolution adopted to recognize his achievements in his two recent bouts.
